Person First. Patient Last: Equity vs. Equality in Patient Education
Course: #1811Level: Introductory 1 Hour 207 ReviewsAppropriate patient education is imperative during appointments and hospital stays to ensure patients are armed with the necessary tools to be successful once they return home. Unfortunately, all people learn differently, and literacy (health literacy as well) levels vary across the nation. Respiratory therapists must personalize general educational information that would best fit that patient versus of using materials and techniques that simply cater to their diagnosis.

MPH, MA RRT, RRT-ACCS, RRT-NPS, TTS, CHES, LPC, NCC
Gabrielle Davis (she/her) has been a registered respiratory therapist for over a decade and is the owner and sole counselor at Equitable Counseling & Consulting which provides Idahoans with mental health therapy. She has earned a graduate degree in public health and another in counseling. Outside of the health/mental health care field, Gabby provides consulting services for offices, organizations and institutions looking to add nicotine addiction/COPD education services or improve equity, belonging, inclusion and accessibility. Additionally, Gabby is currently the Racial Equity and Food Justice Manager for the National Co-op of Grocers. In her free time, Gabby enjoys reminding people that nicotine addiction is a disease, not a choice, dispelling myths about the definition of allyship, and encouraging folks to say I don't know instead of pretending to know. Gabby lives in Michigan with her wife and enjoys ruffling feathers whenever her time allows. Community is Gabby's love language.
