Question
Does the use of avatars take away from the personal connection and trust that is established in treatment?
Answer
We found out, through research, that people can form strong bonds and meaningful relationships through various forms of technology. So not just through the use of avatars but the use of videoconferencing and use of different types of devices. The ability to establish a personal connection varies based on the client and the approach.
Avatars may not give you the same types of facial expressions and body language that you would receive in person, but that does not mean you cannot develop a good, strong bond with people. Think about when you watch a movie or even if you watch an animated movie how it can evoke a lot of emotional response in you. Well, that can be the same thing that arises in interactions through avatars or other types of technology.
