Question

What are the challenges associated with diagnosing ARDS?

Answer

Diagnosing ARDS can be challenging due to its nonspecific clinical features and the need to differentiate it from other causes of respiratory distress. The diagnosis relies on a combination of clinical criteria, including the acute onset of symptoms, bilateral opacities on chest imaging, and the exclusion of cardiac failure or fluid overload as the primary cause of respiratory failure. The PF ratio is a key indicator used to categorize the severity of ARDS. However, variability in presentations and the lack of a definitive diagnostic test can make the diagnosis complex and sometimes ambiguous.
